UTOOLS-College Preparation Experience is a yearly ten-session summer program conducted at the University of Michigan-Dearborn targeting foster youth ages 14-20 from Wayne County. This interactive program equips students with essential knowledge about college admissions, financial aid, career options, and personal and academic success strategies. Enrollees meet with leaders from the university and local business community who provide firsthand advice about career pathways and college life. The program emphasizes the development of skills outlined in the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, fostering improved goal-setting and self-management among participants. Through engagement with diverse professionals, students gain exposure to various education and career options, helping them make informed choices about their futures. Evidence from pre- and post-program surveys indicates a marked improvement in participants’ college readiness and clarity in their educational and life goals.
