Linking Camps and Campers Since 1995
Started in 2009, the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine’s Summer Medical Program aims to foster diversity by educating high school students about medical careers. The program includes multiple sessions that teach students about applying to medical school, experience sharing from minority physicians and health care professionals, clinical instruction by medical faculty, and hands-on shadowing in medical settings. Students also engage in presenting their research findings, which helps solidify their understanding of medicine and healthcare. Evaluations from the first cohort demonstrated enhanced comprehension of the medical school system and increased enthusiasm for medical professions. The initiative highlights ongoing mentorship to keep students motivated on their path toward medical careers.
