Linking Camps and Campers Since 1995
Maryland’s Youth Camps Program, overseen by the Department of Health, licenses youth camps across the state to ensure children’s safety and well-being. According to the program, camps must meet particular standards, including operating durations and camper age eligibility between 3½ and 18 years. Day camps should run at least seven days in a three-week span with a variety of recreational activities, whereas residential camps involve at least five days and four nights with similar activity and camper requirements. The program requires camp operators to perform thorough background checks on staff, maintain appropriate supervision ratios, and ensure health and facility safety. Resources and regulatory guidance are available to assist camp operators in meeting these standards. The program also addresses health concerns by providing training and advice on managing emergencies and following health protocols, such as those related to COVID-19. The goal is to create a positive, secure, and fun summer camp experience for all youth participants.
