Linking Camps and Campers Since 1995
Southern Illinois University’s Junior Aviator Camps cater to children from grade 1 through grade 8, providing an engaging platform to discover the multifaceted world of aviation. Hosted at the Southern Illinois Carbondale Airport, these camps emphasize interactive learning about the roles of pilots, mechanics, and other aviation professionals. The youngest campers (grades 1-3) attend a half-day camp that introduces essential aspects of flying, including aircraft types and weather. Those in grades 4-5 and 6-8 have extended camp schedules that include immersive activities like mini-field trips, simulator flights, and extensive exposure to aviation career options such as air traffic control and aircraft design. The camps combine theory with practical application, allowing participants to gain firsthand experience in flight planning and aircraft operation. Meals are provided for the oldest age group, and weather permitting, campers experience flights in actual aircraft or simulators. Overall, the camps aim to spark interest in aviation careers and provide foundational knowledge and skills in the field.
