Linking Camps and Campers Since 1995
The INMED – RISE Summer Academy is a unique two-week opportunity tailored for enrolled members of federally recognized tribes who are interested in pursuing a medical career. Coordinated by the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, the program blends virtual learning and on-site experiences at the Spokane campus. Initial virtual sessions introduce scholars to faculty and peers, cover essential topics like medical school admissions and science refreshers, and facilitate culturally relevant dialogue. Scholars then attend in-person sessions involving visits to clinics funded by the Indian Health Service, interactive cultural activities, and guidance from medical student mentors. Comprehensive support is offered, including personalized feedback on applications and mock interviews, as well as access to a complete Kaplan MCAT prep course. The program covers all participants’ costs, including travel, lodging, and room and board, fostering an environment that supports Native American students in becoming competitive applicants for medical school. This initiative also nurtures the development of Native cultural identity within the profession and connections with Native physicians.
