This residency program in zoological and aquatic animal medicine spans three years and involves collaboration among the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Brookfield Zoo Chicago, and the John G. Shedd Aquarium. Recognized and accredited by the American College of Zoological Medicine, the program immerses residents in clinical and practical experiences dealing with a variety of species including large carnivores, marine mammals, birds, and reptiles. Rotations occur across multiple institutions providing broad exposure and the opportunity to develop clinical, research, and teaching skills. Residents undertake graduate coursework leading to a master’s degree, engage in research writing with publication requirements, and receive training in epidemiology and specialized zoological medicine subjects. The residency includes a stipend, benefits, and opportunities to attend conferences. Candidates must have completed a veterinary degree and internship, and be eligible for licensure in Illinois, ensuring a high standard of competence and commitment to animal welfare and conservation.
