The Summer Camp by the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is a unique day camp opportunity for children aged 6 to 13 to learn about animal welfare firsthand. Running weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the camp provides age-specific experiences where campers can interact safely with various shelter animals including puppies and kittens. Activities range from animal-themed crafts and games, to educational talks about spaying, neutering, and animal behavior. Participants also assist in improving animals’ shelter lives by making toys, cleaning cages, and socializing pets to aid adoption efforts. The camp is staffed by experienced counselors and volunteers and features special guest lectures from animal care professionals, giving campers valuable insights and hands-on exposure to shelter operations and veterinary care. Overall, this camp fosters compassion and responsibility for animals while offering a fun, engaging learning environment.
