Are you searching for your next great nature summer camp idea?

Nature summer camps offer your child a unique, enriching, and memorable experience where they can foster a connection with the natural environment, develop their confidence and skill sets, and form deep connections with others.

Nature camps typically fully immerse children in the offerings of the great outdoors in a safe, supportive environment – allowing a break from screen time and scheduled routines!

During nature camps, there is a wide variety of activities on offer for the children such as (but not limited to) hiking, camping, wildlife observation, and other outdoor activities.

Nature summer camps extend much further than just surface-level enjoyment for the child, playing a role in the education of survival skills, identification of local plants and animals, and an appreciation for the environment.

This immersion into the environment helps foster a connection between the children and nature, as well as enhances skills such as independence and confidence.

 In this article, we’ll explore:

  • Outdoor activities and wilderness survival skills
  • Environmental education and awareness
  • Creative arts and scientific exploration

And more. Let’s get into it!

Outdoor Exploration and Adventure

Nature camps are centered around outdoor exploration activities that enable children to gain hands-on experiences in natural environments:

Nature Hikes

Summer camps incorporate nature hikes as a crucial component, providing children with a range of advantages.

These include promoting physical, emotional, and mental well-being, as well as nurturing curiosity and a sense of exploration in the natural environment.

These hikes usually entail guided walks through the camp’s natural surroundings, offering opportunities to learn about environmental conservation and the identification of various plants and animals.

Wildlife observation allows children to observe animals in their natural habitat, encourages a deeper understanding of the animal kingdom, and fosters appreciation and connection with nature.

Orienteering and Map Reading Skills

Summer camps involve orienteering and map reading experiences to help educate essential life skills such as navigation, problem-solving, teamwork, and self-reliance.

This typically involves teaching children the basics of a map and how to use it, as well as a compass to navigate through unfamiliar environments and to find specific areas or locations.

Orienteering and map reading is a great activity for children to complete as it enhances their spatial awareness and critical thinking skills!

Canoeing

Canoeing is another activity that is typically on the agenda for summer camps and is great to introduce children to the fundamentals of water sports in a safe, guided, and fun environment.

Canoe fundamentals such as water safety, maintaining balance, paddling through water, and water navigation are just some of the many lessons taught during this activity!

Water safety is a key topic too, including how to use life jackets and understanding the water environment and safety.

Canoeing is a great activity for kids as it provides a fun and adventurous outdoor opportunity, but also strengthens teamwork connections, communication skills with both other children and camp leaders, and promotes self-confidence.

Environmental Education and Awareness

Environmental education, awareness, and conservation are seamlessly integrated into almost every activity at nature camp – and the best part is the children will still be having fun while learning!

Through a combination of hands-on experience, lessons, and discussions both with the other campers and the camp leaders, children should leave summer camp with a stronger connection with nature and a more profound appreciation for the natural environment.

The following workshops and projects will influence the relationship the children form with the natural environment.

 Plant and Animal Identification

  • Learning to identify local wildlife and various plant species
  • Understanding animal tracks and signs for tracking
  • Learning about edible, medicinal, and poisonous plants
  • Learn about animal behavior and habitats.

Eco-friendly Practices and Sustainability Projects

  • Learn about wastage, including touching on responsible consumption
  • Camper projects or workshops to focus on awareness of sustainability
  • Using eco-friendly supplies at the camp and teaching the children how and why.

Nature Conservation and Habitat Restoration

  • Raising awareness on human impact on local habitats, and the effects this has on the nature within the habitat
  • Learn the ‘leave no trace’ principles
  • Encourage creative thinking and confidence in environmental stewardship.

Wilderness Survival Skills

One of the many wonders of summer camp, and something that the children generally tend to quite enjoy is learning the many skill sets associated with wilderness survival.

Teaching children at a young age the resources for survival in emergency situations can help to increase their level of competence and confidence, should they ever be put in a situation that requires these skills!

There are three main groups of survival skills taught at summer camp:

  • Basic First Aid and Outdoor Safety
  • Building Shelters and Safe Campfires
  • Foraging for Edible Plants and Basic Fishing Techniques.

Basic First Aid and Outdoor Safety

Whilst on summer camp, the children will learn the very basics of first aid and outdoor safety.

First aid skills, typically include understanding cuts, scrapes, bruises, swelling, insect bites, burns, strains, and allergic reactions.

Although they will be in the safe and guided care of a leader at all times, it is a great experience for children to understand the very basics of first aid.

Outdoor safety is also of paramount importance including sun safety, hydration, wildlife awareness, hiking safety, weather preparedness, and general water safety.

Building Shelters and Safe Campfires

Children are well-known for loving to build a fort in the backyard, and summer camp teaches them the basics of learning to construct a safe shelter in an emergency situation including the basics of knot tying and location considerations.

Campfires are a firm favorite with all, offering the opportunity for a toasted s’more at night.

Campfire safety will be taught including how to set up the base of the fire ring, where to gather firewood, how to safely start the fire, and how to safely extinguish it.

Foraging for Edible Plants and Basic Fishing Techniques

Another experience and learning opportunity for children offered by summer camp is the ability to safely forage for their own food through edible plants and basic fishing.

Skills will be taught on how to identify and harvest edible plants, paying emphasis on understanding the impact on the environment.

Basic fishing skills will also be introduced including learning about local fish species, respecting size and number limitations, how to fish, and handling fish.

Creative Arts and Nature Crafts

Although a large proportion of the summer camp experience is based on the outdoor activities on offer, there is a large opportunity for children to harness their creative energy in these activities as it can be seamlessly blended in with the nature themes.

Nature Photography and Journaling

Children should be encouraged to take photos of and journal about the flora and fauna they see during their day-to-day activities, including sketches, descriptions, and any personal reflections about what they have learned or how they felt.

Creating Art from Natural Materials

Children should be encouraged to use natural materials found in their camping environment such as leaves and rocks to express themselves and foster their creative thinking.

Environmental Storytelling and Theatre

A key component of summer camp that many of us have heard about is the storytelling around the campfire.

Encourage children to share their feelings, reflections, learnings, and creativity with the other campers and leaders.

Physical Fitness and Mindfulness

Every activity the children encounter during their time at summer camp will involve a combination of physical fitness and mindfulness.

As the campers learn through hands-on experiences, they benefit in ways such as increased physical activity, collaborative work in team sports and group environments, and mindful reflection time in both nature walks and yoga/meditation.

Scientific Exploration and Discovery

At summer camp, children will be offered several opportunities to learn about science explorations and discovery, particularly in the realm of animals, plants, and astronomy.

With all of the ecological marvels discussed previously, children will be encouraged to learn more about the interconnectedness of the ecosystem!

Being in a non-urban location also offers the opportunity to learn more about astronomy through star-gazing as they escape the city smog.

Community Building and Social Skills

Arguably the most important skill learned at summer camp is social skills.

This is both between the children as they have to learn to collaborate, live with, and learn as they are away from routine and their families, as well as with the camp leaders who resume responsibility and take charge of them.

The camp environment instills a sense of community and can provide children with positive social interactions that may have a long-term impact.

Nature Camp Culmination Event

The final night of the summer camp experience is crucial for the children to celebrate the new skills they’ve learned, friendships made, and experiences shared.

As discussed before, this is an opportunity for the campers to gather around the bonfire at night and reflect on their time at summer camp as well as showcase their creative spirit and take a great sense of pride in their learnings and achievements during their time at summer camp.

Final Words

Summer camp is the opportunity of a lifetime for children across America as they are provided with world-class experiences, an opportunity to connect with and learn about nature and the environment, and an opportunity to create life-long friendships with other campers!

Summer camp can help to increase confidence, independence, self-reliance, and communication skills, and is a fantastic opportunity for all.
